Privacy Policy
In short: no account, no ads, no tracking. The menu photo you scan is sent to an AI service (Anthropic) only to read the menu and is not stored by us. Your scan history stays on your iPhone and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud.
Who we are
Gourmo (“we”) is an iPhone app developed by Vitalii Iesmanskyi. Contact: support@gourmo.app.
What we process and why
| Data | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Menu photos you take or choose | Sent over an encrypted connection to our server and to Anthropic’s Claude API to read and explain the menu. Before upload the app reduces the photo and removes its metadata (including location). | Not stored by us. Anthropic processes API data under its commercial terms, does not use it to train models and deletes it after a limited period. |
| Random device identifier created by the app (stored in your iPhone’s Keychain) | Counting free and purchased scans without an account. | Up to 24 months after last use. |
| Apple DeviceCheck token | Confirms requests come from a genuine iPhone and prevents abuse of free scans. We only ask Apple whether the token is genuine; nothing is stored on your device or at Apple for our app. | The token is not stored. |
| Purchase records from Apple (product, date, price, currency, store country, transaction IDs) | Granting what you bought, restoring purchases, handling refunds, accounting. | As long as needed for support and legal obligations. |
| Scan metadata (time, interface language, menu language, number of dishes, processing time, AI usage) | Scan limits, reliability and cost monitoring. | Up to 24 months. |
| IP address | Needed to deliver the service; we store only a salted one-way hash to limit abuse. Our hosting provider derives the approximate city and country from it for each request: the city is shown as the place of the menu in your history, and the country helps recognise an ambiguous currency sign (for example “$”) and is sent to Anthropic with the photo for that purpose. | The hash is kept with scan metadata. City and country are not stored by us. |
| Error reports (error code, short technical message, app version, device identifier) | Finding and fixing problems such as a camera or purchase error. | Up to 12 months. |
We do not collect your name, email, contacts, location or photo library. We do not sell data, show ads, use third-party analytics or track you across apps and websites.
Data that stays with you
Your scanned menus (dish lists and a small preview of the photo), language and currency settings are stored on your device. If iCloud is turned on for your Apple ID, your most recent menus are also kept in your own iCloud (Apple’s key-value storage for this app) so they come back after reinstalling the app or on a new iPhone. We have no access to your iCloud. Deleting a menu from History or using “Clear history” removes it from your devices and your iCloud copy; you can also turn off iCloud for Gourmo in iPhone Settings.
Services we use
- Anthropic (Claude API) — reads menu photos and writes dish explanations.
- Cloudflare — hosts our server and database.
- Apple — App Store purchases, DeviceCheck.
- Wikimedia Commons — dish photos. Your device loads these images directly from their servers, which see your IP address as with any website.
- Cloudflare Workers AI — draws approximate dish illustrations from a short text description of the dish (no photos or data about you are sent). Illustrations are stored on our server and reused for everyone.
- Frankfurter and ExchangeRate-API — exchange rates (no data about you is sent).
Your rights
You can ask us to access or delete data related to your device by writing to support@gourmo.app. Because we have no accounts, we may ask you to send the request from the app (Settings → Contact us) so we can identify your device. If you are in the EU/EEA or UK you also have the right to object, to restrict processing and to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Gourmo is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We will post any changes on this page and update the date above.
